Stari grad is a municipality in the very city center that, together with municipalities Savski venac and Vracar, creates the center of Belgrade. Although it covers the oldest part of the city, the municipality is among the youngest in administrative way. It was created by merging two municipalities - Skadarlija and Terazije on the 1st January 1957.

Although it suffers population outflow, the municipality Stari grad is one of the most densely populated municipalities due to its small area. There are 49.000 residents in Stari grad today, unlike in 1971, when there were almost 100.000 residents.

One third of the Stari grad area is uninhabited. Kalemegdan and an industrial zone near Belgrade Port with dozens of factories and large warehouses contribute to this fact. Besides that, the number of people working in the municipality Vracar is two times larger than the number of residents in this municipality.

Serbian and Belgrade heritage located in this municipality is invaluable. There are:

Kalemegdan - park and favourite promenade with lots of cultural historic monuments, fountains, museums, art pavillions and memorials
