The International Day of Families is celebrated for the first time in the municipality of Novi Beograd in front of the shopping center Mercator on 13th and 14th of May. Visitors of the manifestation "Family weekend" can expect opulent content - educational programmes, plays, animators, obstacle courses and other programmes for the youngest. The Boulevard of Zoran Djindjic, from the Boulevard of Arts to the Omladinskih brigada Street, will be closed to vehicle traffic on the event days.
Families from all parts of Belgrade are invited to attend the event from 9 am to 7 pm. Participation of a large number of charities and organizations is expected. They will present their work and activities, and encourage active participation in supporting most vulnerable families.
The International Day of Families was established by the United Nations in 1993, and the first celebration was on 15th of May 1994 under the slogan "Family day is not about things, it is about cordial relations between parents and children". The theme of the year was "Family: resources and responsibilities in a changing world". Its motto: “Building the Smallest Democracy at the Heart of Society”. The family constitutes the basic unit of society and therefore warrants special attention. The observance of the International Day of Families is held annually in all countries.
