At the end of the 1960s, the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SANU) opened an art gallery as a unit within the competence of the Academy. On the site of former business premises, the architect Grigorije Samojlov designed an impressive space. The first exhibition "Serbian Artists of the XIX Century - Academics" was set up on 20th May and until 31st July, 1968, as long as it lasted, it was seen by 40,000 visitors.
