It was founded in 1895 and the first exhibition was opened in 1904. This is the only museum of this kind in Serbia. Although many collections have been damaged and destroyed in the World Wars I and II, the museum now has 117 collections with over 1,500,000 items from Serbia, the Balkan Peninsula, and the rest of the world, which rank it among the largest in Southeast Europe. The museum does not have a permanent exhibition, the exhibitions are constantly changing.
