The exhibition "Underground Galaxy," running from June 12th to September 15th at the Museum of Science and Technology, will feature photographs and exhibits from the private mineral and crystal collection of Irina Tomic.
Irina's journey, from an idea to a full collection, is shaped by personal stories, choices, and long-standing dedication to collecting. The selection of minerals serves as testament to the deep connection between scientific curiosity and personal experience, while the exhibition itself establishes a meeting space for the visible and hidden, the material and imaginative, the scientific and intimate.
Along with the displayed exhibits, the author also presents macro-photographs of carefully chosen specimens, revealing their complex structures, textures, and visual details which often remain invisible to the naked eye. These scenes do not only possess aesthetic value, but they also deepen the relationship between the viewer and the collection, allowing for new interpretations of familiar objects. Thus, the collection doesn't end with the physical possession of the objects but extends into the space of the image, where science, art, and personal experience intertwine, and each mineral receives a twofold status: as a physical object and as an image, as a scientific specimen and as an aesthetic phenomenon.
As a sort of complement to Irina Tomic's "Underground Galaxy," the exhibition also features exhibits from the collections of the Museum of Science and Technology, the Mineral and Rock Collection of the Faculty of Mining and Geology at the University of Belgrade, and the company "Ametrin" from Subotica.
