This imperial city is portrayed with a concert that begins with a part of Reinhold Glière’s Hymn to a Great City, which has been the official anthem of St. Petersburg. It was written for the needs of the most famous Red Arrow train connecting the former and the present capital, and its sounds echo through the St. Petersburg railway station before the train departs. The most famous piano concerto premiered in this city was Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1, in B flat minor. Sergei Rachmaninoff also spent his childhood there and began his studies at the conservatory, and a few decades later in America, with a sense of nostalgia, he wrote the Symphonic Dances, a work that closes the Belgrade Philharmonic’s concert season.
